You can read here about books, movies, and youtube videos that my kids and I think are cool if you are between 9 and 14 or just like to read those kinds of books. This includes graphic novels, Newbery Medal winners, new and old favorites. Please feel free to add your own favorite picks in the Comments.
See my blogs for reviews of some of the following books:
Perhaps more interesting to girls:
The Lunar Chronicales, made up of Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter by Marissa Meyer
Island of the Blue Dolphins – an old favorite of mine from my tween-hood. I am glad my daughter read it in school.
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold – wonderful books but would be more enjoyed by a more reflective, older tween.
Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman
Matilda Bone, by Karen Cushman
Princess for Hire by Lindsey Leavitt
Shabanu, Daughter of the Wind – a favorite book of mine that I read in the past, so it is not reviewed here
The Treasure Map of Boys by E. Lockhart
Perhaps more interesting to boys:
The Lost Years of Merlin (a national bestseller) and the Fires of Merlin, from T.A. Barron’s series on the young Merlin
Stealing Home by Mary Stolz, winner of a Harper Trophy
Wolf Brother. first in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, by Michelle Paver
I would love to hear more suggestions for good books for tween age boys.
Adventures for boys and girls:
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
The Grey King (Newbery Medal Winner) and Over Sea, Under Stone, from The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper
Knee Deep in Thunder by Shiela Moon
The Mysterious Benedict Society series by Trenton Lee Stewart
Stoneheart, from the Stoneheart Trilogy by Charlie Fletcher
Taran Wanderer, from The Chronicles of Prydain, by Lloyd Alexander. One book in series, The Black Cauldron, won a Newbery Honor and The High King won the Newbery Medal.
